Recruiters in Kenya increasingly search LinkedIn before they open a CV. Here is how to make your profile work as hard as your CV does.
Many Kenyan job seekers set up a LinkedIn profile once, during a job search years ago, and never touch it again. Meanwhile, recruiters โ particularly at multinational companies, NGOs, tech firms and larger banks โ routinely search LinkedIn to find candidates, verify CVs, and screen applicants before an interview. A neglected profile can quietly undermine an otherwise strong application.
Your photo should be a recent, clear headshot with a neutral or plain background, professional dress, and good lighting โ profiles with a photo receive significantly more profile views and connection requests than those without one. Your headline (the line under your name) is one of the most important parts of your profile because it appears in every search result and connection request. Avoid leaving it as your current job title alone.

The About section is your chance to write in first person and show personality and context that a CV bullet point cannot. Structure it in three short parts: who you are professionally and your years of experience, two or three specific achievements or areas of expertise, and what you are looking for next. Keep paragraphs short โ LinkedIn is read on mobile more than desktop, and dense blocks of text get skipped.
Your LinkedIn experience section does not need to be identical to your CV, but it should be consistent in dates, titles and employers โ recruiters do cross-check the two, and inconsistencies raise questions. Unlike a CV, LinkedIn allows unlimited length, so this is a good place to add more context per role than a two-page CV allows, including specific projects or tools used.
List skills that are actually searchable by recruiters โ specific software, methodologies and certifications rather than vague terms like "hardworking" or "team player." LinkedIn allows you to pin your top three skills to the top of the section; choose the three most relevant to the roles you want next, not necessarily the three you are strongest in generally.

A complete profile with no activity or connections still limits your visibility. Connect with former colleagues, classmates and people in your target industry with a short personalized note rather than the default blank invitation. Commenting thoughtfully on posts from people at companies you want to work for is one of the most effective, low-cost ways for Kenyan professionals to get noticed by hiring managers before a role is even advertised.
Turn on "Open to Work" visible to recruiters only (not the public banner) if you are job hunting while currently employed โ this signals availability to recruiters without alerting your current employer's network.
