Tips for Writing a Legal CV in Kenya

State your LSK (Law Society of Kenya) membership status and year of admission clearly near the top — this is the first thing legal employers verify. If you have a practising certificate, note whether it is current, since an advocate without a valid practising certificate cannot appear in court, which matters for litigation-heavy roles.

💡 Practice area specificity

Be specific about your practice area — corporate/commercial, litigation, conveyancing, employment law. Generic "general practice" CVs are harder for specialized legal employers to place than ones with a clear area of strength.

What Kenyan Legal Employers Look For

  • Clear LSK membership status and admission year
  • Valid practising certificate status, where relevant to the role
  • Specific practice area expertise rather than generalist claims
  • Transactional experience with quantified deal or contract volume
  • Regulatory body familiarity relevant to the sector (CBK, CMA, IRA for financial services roles)
