How to Write a Teacher CV in Kenya (2025 Guide)

Whether you are applying to the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) for your first posting, or seeking a job at a private school, your CV needs to be structured correctly. Kenyan school principals and HR officers receive dozens of applications — a well-formatted CV gets you shortlisted faster.

💡 TSC Tip

Always include your TSC Registration Number prominently at the top of your CV. This immediately confirms you are a qualified, registered teacher and builds credibility with the hiring panel.

What Every Teacher CV in Kenya Must Include

  • Full name, TSC number, ID number and contacts
  • A clear career objective focused on your teaching philosophy
  • Education history — P1 Certificate, Diploma or Degree
  • Subjects you are qualified to teach and class levels
  • Previous schools taught at with specific achievements
  • Extra-curricular contributions (sports, clubs, leadership)
  • 2–3 professional referees including your current/former headteacher

Subjects to Highlight for CBC Teachers

With Kenya's shift to the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC), schools are specifically looking for teachers who understand the new framework. Make sure your CV mentions:

  • CBC learning areas you teach (e.g., Mathematics, English, Hygiene & Nutrition)
  • Any CBC training or workshops attended through KICD
  • Portfolio-based assessment experience
  • Parent engagement and community involvement activities
⚠️ Common Mistake

Never list "Available upon request" for referees when applying to Kenyan schools. Headteachers want to see the actual contact details of your referees on the CV itself — include names, phone numbers and email addresses.

Private School vs TSC Applications

For private school applications, you can be slightly more creative with formatting and include a professional photo. Highlight student results, extra-curricular roles and any international curriculum experience (IGCSE, IB).

For TSC/public school applications, keep the format strictly professional. Use Times New Roman or Calibri font, black text only, and follow the standard structure shown in the template above.
